The CMC Networks Global Challenge
September 2022 – Richard Jubber
In 2021, as lock downs and COVID restrictions eased, CMC Networks set up a staff wellness initiative to encourage staff to exercise and stay healthy. We used an online platform that can collate exercise activities and daily steps from the various smartphone and smartwatch platforms and plot the team’s cumulative distance against the planned route for the year and a pacesetter for daily distance. On web or the mobile app, you can check in each day on progress, as well as check out Google Street View (if available) to see where in the world we are! So whether staff were running, cycling, playing cricket or squash, or seeking zen on a yoga mat, their distance, steps or time logged contributes to the team goal.
For our 2021/2022 CMC Africa Challenge, we set a target of over 42,000 km taking us on a circumnavigation of Africa and the Middle East, covering our 100 Service Locations in over 51 countries across the region. In 2022/2023, we more than doubled this goal to 93,000 km; plotting a route to visit all of our staff around the world: starting in South Africa, heading to Mauritius, Egypt, Pakistan and Australia, and then on to the USA and our colleagues in mainland Europe and the UK, before finally heading back to HQ in Johannesburg via West Africa. Most importantly, participants across the company tripled, and we have over half the company engaged in the challenge.
As we approach our half-year, we are comfortably ahead of the goal and have just passed through Hawaii on our transpacific leg of the journey.
